In the treatment of such a subject, it is manifestly impossible to attempt to lay down definite laws for guidance in the design of engineering structures; and it is the object of this Paper to notice a few of the more salient features of design in modern bridge con struction, which, considered with a due regard to correct propor tion and pleasing appearance, go far to enhance the aesthetic effect of the completed work.
