Excerpt from The Doctrine of Limits, With Its Applications: Namely, Conic Sections, the First Three Sections of Newton, the Differential Calculus; A Portion of a Course of University Education

But though these considerations appear to render such a work as the present desirable, they would probably not have been sufficient to induce me to encounter the labour and difficulty of writing it, if I had not thought that it would illustrate and promote the genuine objects of the study of Mathematics as part of a University education. I have already endeavoured to define those objects, and to extend our means of attaining them, and I will now make a few further remarks on the subject, with a special reference to the present Treatise.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth exploration of the Doctrine of Limits, a fundamental concept in mathematics. Devised by the author to aid understanding of this doctrine, it provides a comprehensive analysis of its principles and applications, drawing on examples from geometry and mechanics. The author's approach offers a rigorous development of the subject, expounding on Newton's original ideas and extending the doctrine to elucidate central forces. Through detailed explanations and propositions, it demonstrates the power of the Doctrine of Limits to reason about the behaviour of continuous quantities, establishing a solid foundation for further mathematical study. By situating the doctrine within the broader context of mathematical history and its role in scientific inquiry, the book offers invaluable insights into the development of mathematical thought and its enduring significance in understanding the physical world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
