Taking advantage of the rainy season, when the troops had been withdrawn from the mcently occupied territory, and only the civil omeara and police remained, the Goorkhas te-invaded it, killed most of the police, and shot the head oflicer to death with arrows, having tied him to a tree; and the act was avowed and suppo by the Raja. Lord Hastings, on his side, now immediately prepared for wan - filling the Bengal treasury, still nearly empty, in spite of the late peace governors, chiefly by means of loans from the newly-installed N awab of Oude, made at a rate of interest much lower than the current one.
