Excerpt from Elementary Algebra
IN the following work I have endeavoured to explain the principles of Algebra in as simple a manner as possible for the benefit of beginners, bestowing great care upon the explanations and proofs of the funda mental operations and rules. The book will be found to differ considerably from those at present in use, but I do not think the new methods will prove to be difficult.
Writers of elementary text books, in attempting to smooth the path of the learner, are exposed to the danger of paying too little attention to the logical ground work of their subject: an apparent simplicity is thus gained, but at a loss of much of the educational value. I have endeavoured to avoid this very real and serious danger.
