Excerpt from Report on the "Daphne" Disaster
I should have been glad, had it been possible, to have avoided the necessity of dealing at length in this report with this very technical question, both because its investigation involves the introduction of somewhat abstract scientific matters, and because it is impossible to discuss it at all without making some reference to the stability of ships in other than launching conditions. But as the matter bears in the most direct and immediate manner upon the disaster to the Daphne, and as the disclosure of unexpected circumstances concerning the launching condition of ships may serve to avert possible future calamities, I have felt bound to investigate the matter and report 11 on it.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the disaster of the Daphne, a ship that capsized during its launch, killing 124 people. The author, an official tasked with investigating the accident, discovered several problems that contributed to the tragedy, including the ship's low stability and the presence of too many top-heavy structures. As a result of the investigation, the book includes a discussion on the broader issue of improving ship designs and construction methods to increase safety during launches. The author presents a detailed analysis of the contributing factors to the Daphne disaster and explores the evolving understanding of ship stability and safety measures within the shipbuilding industry during that era. By highlighting the need for greater scientific rigor and attention to detail in ship design, this book serves as a valuable resource for naval architects, engineers, and anyone interested in maritime safety.
