Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the structure of lava flows that have solidified on steep slopes. The author questions the validity of the "Craters of Elevation" theory which was often used to explain the formation of volcanic mountains. This theory relied on upheaval to explain the dips of lava beds at the base of volcanoes, often in excess of 5 degrees. The author argues that if this was the case, much steeper dips would have been observed in modern lava flows given their rapid cooling. He travelled to Mount Etna in Italy to examine modern lava flows that had consolidated at steep angles. He uses these observations to argue that the Crater theory is not valid. His observations also give a unique insight into the structure and composition of lava flows that have solidified on steep slopes, providing valuable information for geologists and volcanologists.
