These are heavy themes, that add weight to the story without overpowering the narrative. The narrative is framed by the homecoming of Henry Daly, Godfrey's son. Henry's arrival brings joy to his father, but it is tempered by the knowledge of the difficulties that the family is facing. The book ends with Godfrey Daly's death and his son's assumption of the responsibilities of the family.
