La conscience est une. Chaque moment de mon existence exprime ma nature entière. Mais l'unité de la conscience n'exclut pas la diversité des éléments qui la composent. L'unité spirituelle se nourrit de la com plexité des choses, et l'harmonie du tout est en raison du libre mouvement des parties. La pensée est rebelle à toute loi, à celle des fins non moins qua celle des causes. Et peut - être la nécessité rationnelle elle - même n'est-elle que l'expression la plus claire, mais non la plus profonde d'une exacte proportion et dune con venance supreme auxquelles la conscience ne laisse pas d'obe1r, encore qu'elle ne subisse, de ce fait, aucune contrainte. La loi la moins faillible est la loi non écrite.
