Excerpt from Note su Bacchilide

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the writings of Bacchylides, a lesser-known contemporary of Pindar. Through a linguistic and thematic analysis of the author's work, the book explores the complex relationship between the two poets, who despite operating in the shadow of Pindar, were rivals both in art and in public esteem. This book argues that Bacchylides's work, while not as bombastic or technical as Pindar's, was equally sophisticated and artful, but distinguished itself by attempting to forge a connection to the common man. This book places Bacchylides squarely in the context of the intellectual movements of the 5th century BCE and makes a case for understanding their work as a critique of the increasingly esoteric style favored by Pindar and his contemporaries.
