Excerpt from Karl Marx and the Close of His System: A Criticism
Marx himself recognised that there was a difficulty here (see below, p. And he pro mised that the solution would be duly given. He died in March, 1 883, and the promise made in 1867 was not fulfilled till 1894, when his friend and executor, Engels, published the third volume of Capital, on the Process of Capi talistic Production as a Whole. The inter mediate volume, ou the Process of the Circula tion of Capital, published by Engels in 188 5, gave no light on the matter, but contained the challenge described in the present essay (below, p. 2 It is fair to add that Professor Lexis gave substantially the right answer (see Preface of Engels to vol. This book delves into the intricate world of Karl Marx's economic theory, offering a comprehensive analysis of his ideas on value, surplus value, and the formation of profit. The author meticulously examines Marx's core concepts, dissecting the logic behind his assertions and exposing the potential weaknesses in his system. The book stands as a crucial contribution to the ongoing debate surrounding Marxist economics, particularly in its detailed examination of the apparent contradiction between Marx's "law of value" and the observed reality of equal profit rates across different industries. The author explores the intricacies of Marx's attempt to reconcile these seemingly disparate ideas, highlighting how the evolution of his theory led to a shift away from his initial assumptions. Through a rigorous examination of Marx's own arguments, the author skillfully reveals the fundamental flaw at the heart of Marx's economic system. The book ultimately challenges the validity of Marx's conclusions, exposing the inherent limitations of his theory and providing valuable insights into the enduring debates surrounding his influential work.
