Indi le sue marine e i suoi porti creb bero improvviso al somavvenir delle navi d' Europa, e formarono scale ed emporii tramirabili di ricchezza, d'industria, d'anima e di vita eziandio per le città entro terra, che dal Mississipi dall' Ohio dal Tenessee, dal Missurì, dal Potomac, dal san Lorenzo, e da mill' altre riviere e guadi e canali comunicaron col mare a tras portarvi loro derrate e manifatture.
