S'il est un mal qui répand la terreur c'est bien la maladie, d'origine encore inconnue, qui rend le chien fou*, c'est bien cette démence, étrangement contagieuse par la salive. Les découvertes de M. Pasteur ont ajouté un remède certain et benin au remède héroïque de la cautérisation au fer rouge, trop souvent impraticable parce qu'il doit être im médiat. Un mal aussi répandu et aussi désespéré que la rage a donné lieu à bien des croyances et a bien des pra tiques, et comme ce mal était jusqu'à M. Pasteur resté à peu près en dehors de la médecine, puisque celle - ci était impuissante, ces croyances et ces pratiques se sont con servées jusque sous nos yeux mêmes, tandis que pour les autres maladies, le médecin a, peu a peu, remplacé l'homme à secrets le sorcier, le thaumaturge.
