Les personnes qui ont étudie cet homme extraordi naire doivent désirer connaître plus intimement ses rapports avec les grands seigneurs, les gens de lettres, les femmes célèbres de son époque, et vérifier dans quelle mesure ses soupçons étaient fondés et ses mal heurs imaginaires. Jusqu'à présent, il avait fallu s'en tenir à ses assertions; plusieurs les repoussaient en totalité, beaucoup ne les admettaient qu'avec réserve. On verra si les lettres qu'on va lire les réfutent ou les confirment.
Les correspondants de jean-jacques n'avaient pas tous la même position sociale: chacun a son style à lui, ét nous l'avons respecté scrupuleusement; il en résulte un contraste curieux de formes et de nuances qui exclut la monotonie. Une autre particularité qu'il ne faut pas oublier, c'est qu'en écrivant les Confessions, leur auteur a eu plus d'une fois recours aux lettres que nous pu blions; il y renvoie même dans quelques passages pour des explications ou de plus amples détails. On peut donc regarder ces deux volumes comme le complément indispensable des Mémoires du philosophe genevois.
