Gustave Flaubert, au lendemain de la Tenta tion de saint Antoine, était pour nous une idole. Il réalisait a nos yeux le type achevé de l'homme de lettres, l'écrivain exemplaire, héroïque et par fait. Un inconnu qui se présentait en son nom revêtait par cela même un caractère sacré. Mon devoir élémentaire était de relire une troisième fois les vers de M. Guy de Valmont. L'auteur étant un ami de Flaubert, je cédai a mon désir de les admirer.
