Excerpt from Elementary German Prose Composition: Selected Passages From Modern English Authors for Translation Into German
I have further provided the extracts with such editorial matter as will make it possible for students to use them as a graduated and systematic guide to German composition. The Notes contain, in addition to idiomatic translations of the more diffi cult passages and of unusual expressions, indirect aids for producing a correct rendering, chiefly in the form of paraphrases of the original text, which mode will greatly facilitate the work of translation' The Notes include, further, a number of syntactical rules accompanied by examples, but, in keeping with the elementary character of the book, such rules only have been given as are absolutely necessary in the early stages of German Prose Composition.
In these paraphrases, indicated by the word turn,' the English is not arranged in the German order of words, as it is desirable that the student should exercise his own judgement regarding the arrangement of the respective sentences.

This book presents a wide-ranging collection of translated extracts from German prose writing for intermediate learners, guiding them through sentence construction, grammar, and the finer points of the German language. The original German prose has been carefully chosen by the author from the works of established and respected German authors, representing a variety of styles. The extracts have then been translated into English, with the accompanying notes and commentary elucidating the grammatical and syntactical rules that govern the German language. The author has arranged the extracts into three progressive parts, providing exercises at the end of each part to test students' comprehension and ability to apply the rules. Within the extracts, there is a good deal of thematic variety, ranging from natural history and folklore to historical events and contemporary social issues. The author takes a systematic approach to the subject matter, laying out clearly and methodically the rules of the language and providing guidance on how to apply them to writing. Throughout, the author is cognisant of the challenges faced by learners and offers helpful advice and practical examples to aid understanding.
