Le but de la premi�re est de d�couvrir la nature de tous les �l�ments qui consti tuent un corps compos�, celui de la seconde est d'en d�terminer la quantit�.

Dans l'analyse qualitative on obtient le r�sultat d�sir� en donnant aux �l�ments inconnus des formes connues. L'analyse quantitative arrive � son but par des proc�d�s divers selon les circonstances, mais dont l'ensemble constitue cependant deux m�thodes essentiellement diff�rentes, savoir l'analyse par pes�es et l'analyse volum�trique. Toutes deux r�solvent le pro bl�me, mais elles proc�dent d'une fa�on tout � fait distincte.
