Par suite de ces diverses études antérieures, la connaissance des grands monuments étant considérée comme provisoire ment acquise, il nous restait à rechercher les autres et à en préciser la description c'est ce que nous nous sommes efforcé de faire dans cet inventaire.
L'arrêté concernant les Monuments historiques devait être soumis, avant le mois de février 190 1, à la signature du Gou verneur général, dont la rentrée en France était annoncée pour cette époque. Cette date impérative limitait à une période de six mois la durée de notre mission. Ce laps de temps nous avait paru tout d'abord largement suffisant; nous ne devions pas tarder à nous apercevoir que nous étions dans l'erreur.
