Nous avons trouvé, relativement aux origines, quel ques excellents renseignements dans des ouvrages tels que ceux de MM. Magnin, G. Sand, V. Fournel, L. Molland. L'examen des Estampes historiques ou de recueils tels que le Musée de la Caricature nous a été aussi fort utile. Mais nous sommes remonté surtout aux sources originales; c'est - à - dire que nous avons suivi les types au travers des pièces mêmes, et d'après l'ordre chronologique.
