Au commencement de cette année, je me décidai à mon tour à reprendre les démarches du D Puton. Plus heu reux que lui, j'eus la satisfaction de sauver le manus crit. Je l'achetai à la veuve de l'auteur à frais communs avec M. Puton, de Remiremont, et Lethierry, de Lille, depuis longtemps possesseurs des dessins de Fieber. Malheureusement quelques parties du manuscrit étaient déjà perdues. Placés dans l'alternative de publier un travail fragmentaire ou de compléter ce travail, mes amis n'hésitèrent pas. Ils me proposèrent de le compléter, c'est à - dire d'entreprendre, eux la monographie des genres perdus, et ils me prièrent de traduire en français la partie sauvée du manuscrit, afin de pouvoir livrer à la publicité un ouvrage homogène et de même langue. J 'hésitai d'abord à entreprendre ce travail difficile et de longue haleine mais mes amis m'ayant offert leur concours dévoué, mes scrupules se levèrent et je me mis à l'ouvrage.
