Inhaltsangabe

Excerpt from Observations on the Topography of the Plain of Troy, and on the Principal Objects Within, and Around It Described, or Alluded To, in the Iliad: Shewing That the System of M. De Chevalier, So Long Upheld, Is Founded on a Most Erroneous Topography, and Also, That the Two Sources, Denominated the Warm, and the Cold, Spring, on Which His System Materially Rests, Not Present Any Contrast

Such being the state of things, it became a service of some danger, for an humble individual to enter the lists, in the face of an opinion, which had been repeatedly approved by men of the first erudition in Europe, during the last twenty years but as it will be made to appear, that their opinions were founded an an erroneous statement of the Topography, as well as of the temperature of the Springs, (absolutely as well as comparatively), the Author trusts that he will stand acquitted of presumption, or of a wish to cavil.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the age-old debate surrounding the location of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict immortalized in Homer's Iliad. It challenges prevailing assumptions and sheds new light on the ancient landscape of the Troad region, where the epic battle is said to have unfolded. Drawing upon the insights of ancient geographers, particularly Demetrius of Scepsis, the author meticulously examines the topographical features of the region, including the rivers, mountains, and plains, to reconcile them with Homer's descriptions. By carefully analyzing the accounts of Demetrius, Strabo, and Pliny, the author offers a fresh perspective on the location of Troy and the surrounding landmarks. The book explores the complexities of interpreting ancient texts and the challenges of reconstructing historical landscapes. It highlights the significance of geographical accuracy in understanding the events of the Iliad and sheds light on the enduring legacy of the Trojan War in both ancient and modern imagination. By revisiting this timeless debate, the author invites readers to reconsider their understanding of one of history's most captivating conflicts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
