Excerpt from Observations on an Autograph of Shakspere, and the Orthography of His Name: Communicated to the Society of Antiquaries by Sir Frederic Madden, K. H., F. R. S. And S. A. In a Letter to John Gage, Esq. F. R. S. Director
The Chatterton forgeries are now preserved in the British Museum, mss. Add. 5766, a.b.c. And exhibit the most decisive proofs ofthe impudence of the imposture, and the obstinate igno rance ofthose who were to the last its champions. These defenders of Rowley argue that Chatterton was incapable of reading any work of research; but ifso, how is it we find among his fictions the list of romances printed in Madox's Formulare Anglicanum, and a copy of the kneeling figure of one of the Howard family.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical debate regarding the correct spelling of William Shakespeare's name. The author analyzes five undisputed genuine signatures from the playwright and explores the inconsistent orthography of surnames during his time. He presents evidence suggesting that the spelling "Shakespere" may not have been the playwright's preference, as it does not appear in his two printed letters or in the only contribution he made to another author's work. The book examines the influence of literary contemporaries and editors on the spelling of Shakespeare's name, ultimately arguing that "Shakespeare" is the form he intended for use in literature, as evidenced by the consistent usage of his close associates and the inclusion of a hyphen in the only contribution he ever made to the work of another author.
