Je ne me fais donc pas d'illusion. Et pourtant, je me rends. Je me rends, parce que je sais fort bien que, sans une revue qui lui serve d'organe, une science ne peut guère progresser. Tous les travailleurs ont besoin de se connaître, de suivre leurs mutuels efforts, d'être excités ou corrigés par les découvertes des uns et les critiques des autres. De plus, ils ne peuvent se passer du trésor de faits et d'observations, que seules une collaboration étendue et des compétences spéciales peuvent réunir dans un recueil accessible à tous. J'espère que tous les phonéticiens m'en sauront gré.
Au reste, je veux bien l'avouer, mes craintes ne sont point sans quelque secret espoir de me tromper. Je crois que nous avons des chances de succès que nos prédécesseurs n'avaient pas, car nous donnerons à notre programme une ampleur plus grande, et nous espérons rendre par un service de commission à nos souscripteurs le prix même de leur abonnement.
