La plus importante de toutes les conquêtes des Arabes, a côté de celle de l'irâk, est sans doute celle de la Syrie. Depuis les temps les plus reculés ce pays avait été occupé par la race sémitique, et quoique le gouverne ment siégeât a Constantinople, la population était en grande partie sémitique et même arabe. Il ne s'agissait donc pas de la conquête d'un domaine étranger dont le tribut serait le seul fruit direct, mais du recouvrement d'une portion de la patrie, gémissant sous un joug étranger, l'acquisition d'un nombre considérable de compatriotes et de co-défenseurs de la gloire d'allah et de son prophète. Vingt-cinq années a peine se sont écoulées depuis l'arrivée des Musulmans en Syrie, lorsque Moâwia, avec le secours des Syriens, s'empare du khalifat dont il établit le siégé à Damas, et dès ce temps nous trouvons constamment les Syriens parmi les premiers défenseurs de l'islam.
On conçoit aisément que ces premières conquêtes for maient un sujet de conversation favori du peuple qui recueillait avidement de la bouche des vieux guerriers et qui aimait à se redire les détails d'un événement si im portant. Mais tout intéressants que sont ces premiers exploits.
