J usqu'au jour où les frères Grimm, après avoir publié leurs Contes d'enfants et du foyer, les firent suivre en 1822 d'un commentaire rapprochant chacun d'eux d'un nombre infini de variantes orales dont le cercle s'étendait au delà des limites de l'allemagne, on ne s'était guère intéressé à de tels mor ceaux que pour eux - mêmes. Ce qui avait fait jadis et faisait alors la fortune des Contes de Perrault c'était uniquement leur mérite intrinsèque, c'étaient, bien qu'ils fussent des récits de paysans et de bonnes femmes, la trame légère de leur ao tion, la naïveté et la gentillesse de leur exposition et, il faut l'ajouter, la science d'observation et la connaissance réelle du coeur humain qu'ils cachaient sous leur enveloppe rustique et en fantine. Cet attrait, ils ne l'ont certes pas perdu nous conti nuons a prendre un véritable plaisir a leurs aimables ou tou chantes péripéties le parfum d'antiquité qu'ils exhalent n'est pas d'ailleurs ce qui déplairait en eux a notre époque si éclec tique dans ses admirations, éprise de toutes les formes d'art, des plus rudimentaires comme des plus compliquées, et nous ne laissons pas d'être étonnés des scrupules de Perrault qui n'osait pas les publier sous son nom et du dédain de Voltaire qui lui fermaitimpitoyablement la porte du Temple du Goût.
