Excerpt from The Reign of Doctor Joseph Gaspard Roderick De Francia in Paraguay: Being an an an Account of a Six From Residence, in That Republic
We had scarcely got beyond the frontier of Paraguay, when we were assailed with inquiries concerning Doctor Francia. Such was the complete ignorance about him, which prevailed even at the very entrance of his province! Again, at Buenos Ayres, where we stayed several months; then at Brazil, where we were obliged to put in for repairs; and lastly in Europe, we had reason to be satisfied, that the Dictator of Paraguay was an object of equal curiosity. Every body appeared to form a notion of his own as' to the character of Francia, according as reliance was placed on the false and contradictory stories of travellers, who had visited the South American coast. By some he was looked upon as a philosopher, who, being anxious to secure his fellow-countrymen from the miseries of revolution, and to introduce civilization amongst them.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and reign of Doctor Francia, the enigmatic dictator of Paraguay from 1814 to 1840. The author, a European traveler who resided in Paraguay during Franciaââ â¢s rule, provides a firsthand account of the dictatorââ â¢s policies and personality, offering a unique glimpse into a largely isolated nation. The book traces the development of Franciaââ â¢s absolute power, his paranoia and suspicion of foreign influence, and the impact of his rule on the people of Paraguay. Set against the backdrop of South American independence movements and the ongoing struggle for power between Spain, Argentina, and Brazil, Franciaââ â¢s dictatorship emerges as a compelling case study in the complexities of revolution and nation-building. The bookââ â¢s observations on Franciaââ â¢s autocratic rule, his unwavering pursuit of isolation, and his manipulation of the peopleââ â¢s fears provide a compelling glimpse into the consequences of unchecked power and offer a valuable historical perspective on the rise and fall of dictatorships in the Americas.
