Excerpt from The Elements of Greek: A First Book With Grammar, Exercises, and Vocabularies
The tables of the letters and the diphthongs, with exercises in writing, will be found useful throughout the book. Helps for making the letters are given on page 267. The second lesson begins with oxytones of the first declension. By this use of the first declension, the third lesson is made mostly a review of the second. The use of oxytones permits of the introduction of adjectives without any new rules for accent. The accent of the penult, by far the most difficult of all, is delayed at least two weeks, and, when reached, is mastered easily.

This book is an introductory text to the fundamentals of Ancient Greek, an inflectional language used by the ancient Greeks of the Classical Era and Koine period. It is designed to teach students the grammar and vocabulary of ancient Greek through a focus on the first declension as used in Attic Greek, the dialect known from the works of Plato and the Athenian Orators. Thematic depth in Ancient Greek is derived from understanding the grammar of a language that differed greatly from all modern European languages. This book provides students with a strong foundation in Greek grammar from which they can advance to the study of Classical Greek literature and philosophy.
