Excerpt from Practical and Theoretical Esperanto: A Handy Textbook for Beginners and Advanced Students, for Selfinstruction and Teaching Purposes; Containing Elementary Grammar, Formation of Words, Complete Syntax and Exercises
In regard to the vowels the author distinguishes strictly two points, the quantity and the quality. The quantity is the time required for the pronunciation of a vowel it may be long, medium, or short. The quantity is not an essential point of the vowel. The quality depends on the form which the mouth must assume for the pronunciation of the vowel. The quality is essential. By changing the quantity the vowel remains the same, only the duration of the pronunciation is changed. By changing the quality an entirely different vowel is obtained. Quantity and quality are independent of each other, that is, it is possible, although sometimes a little difficult, to pro nounce any vowel long, medium, or short.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricacies of Esperanto, an artificial international language developed by Dr. L. Zamenhof in the late 19th century. Emerging from a period marked by failed attempts at creating a universal language, such as Volapük, Esperanto aimed to provide a neutral and accessible means of communication for people across the globe. The author meticulously dissects the language's structure, offering a comprehensive guide to its pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The book emphasizes the logical and systematic nature of Esperanto, highlighting its unique features like the lack of irregular verbs and the use of affixes to create new words with precise meanings. Readers are introduced to the concept of root words, affixes, and their combinations, illustrating how Esperanto's vocabulary expands exponentially from a relatively small set of base elements. Exploring the formation of words and the construction of sentences, the book underscores the clarity and flexibility of Esperanto syntax. Examples demonstrate the various ways to arrange sentence elements while maintaining meaning, showcasing the language's adaptability to different styles and preferences. This detailed analysis reveals the thoughtful design behind Esperanto, its capacity for nuanced expression, and its potential to foster cross-cultural understanding. Ultimately, this book presents Esperanto as a testament to the human desire for connection and the enduring pursuit of a common tongue.
