Excerpt from A Study of the Effect of Submergence Upon the Efficiency of a Water Turbine: A Thesis
It has been the unsubstantiated opinion of many hydraulic engineers that turbines should never be placed below the tail water. They have held that this submergenoe causes a loss of from.fonr to eight percent in the efficiency of the plant, a loss which would sometimes mean the success or failure of a large plant. It has been the supposition of others that at small gate openings snbmergonoe might increase. The efficiency of the turbine. This idea was based upon the belief that the inflow, under submerged conditions at small gate openings, was changed from the impinging action of unsnbmerged condition to a flow similar to that of the reaction type of turbine with its resultant higher efficiency.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents results and key findings from an extensive series of experiments conducted by the author to assess the impact of submergence on water turbine efficiency. The author begins by examining the limited research that has been conducted on the subject, demonstrating the need for a more comprehensive investigation. Using a specially designed experimental apparatus, the author conducted a series of tests under varying conditions, carefully controlling factors such as head, load, and gate opening. Through meticulous analysis of the data, the author provides valuable insights into the relationship between submergence and turbine performance, shedding light on an important aspect of water turbine operation. The findings presented in this book will be of great interest to researchers, engineers, and practitioners involved in the design and operation of water turbines, as well as those seeking to optimize the efficiency of hydropower systems.
