XX Ruthe Winegarten has written, coauthored, or edited eight books about Texas women and Texas history, including the award-winning Texas Women, a Pictorial History: From Indians to Astronauts (recently revised as Governor Ann Richards and Other Texas Women: From Indians to Astronauts). Her other books include I Am Annie Mae: The Personal Story of a Black Texas Woman (which was turned into a musical by Winegarten and Naomi Carrier), Citizens at Last: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Texas, and Deep in the Heart: The Lives and Legends of Texas Jews. A former member of the Governor's Commission for Women, Ruthe Winegarten currently serves on the board of the Texas African American Heritage Organization.
