Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First American Edition of Garrison-Morton 258.9 (London: 1974): 'A well-documented history of molecular biology.' xxiii, 510 pp; 26 illus. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Copy of Paul Doty (1920-2011), with his ink name stamp on the front pastedown. Doty 'was an emeritus Harvard Mallinckrodt Professor of Biochemistry who specialized in the physical properties of macromolecules and was strongly involved in peace and security policy issues. . . . In 1954, he helped to recruit James Watson to the Harvard Biolabs, the home of the Biology Department, as an assistant professor. Doty later helped to found the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and became its first chairman in 1968. His scientific work involved the characterization of biopolymers such as DNA, proteins and collagen by optical methods such as circular dichroism and light scattering. In his 42 years at Harvard, he supervised the research of 44 students, 10 of whom have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences' (Wikipedia). Doty is referred to on pp. 331 and 389 and each reference is interesting: the first recalls a May 12, 1950 meeting of the Faraday Society where Rudolf Signer distributed high quality DNA and among the 'fortunate' recipients were Maurice Wilkins and Doty. The other says that Roy Markham thought Doty told James Watson in the winter of 1951-52 about Erwin Chargaff's crucial work on base pairs. '[B]ut if Watson told Crick, as he claims he did (Helix, 1926), Crick forgot.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 21438
