Hardcover. Small 4to. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering. x, 222pp. Very good. Internally tight and fine, with the faintest of binding wear only. Handsome first edition of the second of five well-received Homer titles by the well-known Italian-English classical scholar (1921-2004), long-time professor at McGill University (1966-87). He inscribes and signs the front flyleaf in black point to another notable classical scholar: "For John Herington / welcoming him / [two words in Greek: home?] / very affectionately / Paolo / Montreal, February 17, '83." John Herington, 1924-97, was a renowned Aeschylus scholar who taught throughout the U.S. and also in Canada, where he and Vivante likely met; he signs simply "Herington" alongside Vivante's inscription.
