It has been known for many years that Munch made use of photography in his art, but this book reveals a far deeper, more complex and interesting dependence of photography of all kinds than had hitherto been realised. Based on a thorough investigation of the archives of the Munch Museum in Oslo, Eggum discloses new aspects of Munch's art and artistic practice and establishes new contexts and relationships in which even some of Munch's most famous paintings may be seen and understood. Relating his painting to his early photographic experiments and to the parallel interests of Christian Krohg and August Strindberg, Eggum is able to trace the influence of various photographic traditions -the "snapshot", spirit photography, picturesque photography, the picture postcard and the occult and pseudo-scientific- in Munch's work and to show how he, working closely with Strindberg, began to understand and deploy the symbolic applications of photography in a way consistent with his own work.
