This is the first book of its kind which provides an international perspective on how and why we begin to specialize in school and college. It incorporates original research which focuses on the pupil/student's view and examines the factors which influence their conceptions and decisions, with particular consideration given to the important issue of gender.
Subjects of Choice attempts to make sense of a variety of different perspectives on subject choice in a way which is of some practical use to those involved in curriculum planning, management and guidance, since whichever approach is taken, some basic operational questions continue to demand answers. Is it good to give pupils and students choice? If so, how much, in what areas and at what age or stage of development? Is one of the purposes of the secondary/tertiary curriculum to offer choice, and if so, how might this best be done? Do curriculum choices have an educational or merely a selective function? (Are they really 'choices'?) How can pupils and students be most effectively prepared or helped to make the choices which are best for themselves and for society?
This study will be invaluable both to academics specializing in the curriculum and to teachers and school managers.
