Buchbeschreibung Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm, [15], 331 pp, ills. From the blurb: "This second volume [of Maisie Ward's biography] . sheds new light on the quality of Browning's puzzling involvement with the world about him after Elizabeth died. Browning's often repeated detachment from the world during these years was, as Miss Ward points out, only an apparent one. The England that had been so cold to him while Elizabeth was alive welcomed him with open arms after his return from Italy. His life became a series of galas and honouring dinners, particularly after the aristocratic world took him up feverishly. Miss Ward examines his relationship with Lady Ashburton and other women of High Society to determine whether Browning ever loved again after his wife's death. This many-sided world into which he was plunged included friendships and disputes with many great people of the time. The book provides fascinating sketches of many of them: Carlyle, Swinburne, the Rossetti brothers, Matthew Arnold, Alfred and Emily Tennyson, Anne Thackeray, Mary Gladstone, Henry James, Charlotte Bronte, and Browning's close friend and publisher, George Smith. Here, too, is a particularly perceptive analysis of Browning's relationship with his son who, much spoiled during Elizabeth's lifetime, was never adequately able to come to grips with the private responsibilities and obligations of a grown man. Yet the man who was so involved in the social amenities of Victorian England, and they were considerable, was also the poet of The Ring and the Book and other great philosophical and historical poetry during this time. Could this great poet be the Robert Browning of dinner parties, so well groomed, so elegantly dressed, so full of small talk? Did one man write while the other was dining out, as Henry James suggests?" Bookplate of Edward F. Lydall on front pastedown endpaper, otherwise Good in used dustwrapper.
