Part of a once-a-decade series on physics, this volume is the third of an eventual seven. Illustrated in color, the volume surveys the state of research and future trends in the field with chapters on low-temperature plasma science and engineering, space and astrophysical plasmas, basic plasma science, and the plasma science of magnetic fusion. Each chapter describes the topic and addresses its usefulness, forecasting future areas for research and applications. The volume concludes with appendices that summarize federal support at the Department of Energy and elsewhere, list earlier reports, and describe the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and the National Ignition Facility. The volume is not indexed. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Wraps. 241 p. : Illustrations. "Uncorrected Proofs. Wording subject to change". This work was performed by the Plasma 2010 Committee, of the Plasma Science Committee, of the Board of Physics and Astronomy, of the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences. As part of its current physics decadal survey, Physics 2010, the NRC was asked by the DOE, NSF, and NASA to carry out an assessment of and outlook for the broad field of plasma science and engineering over the next several years. The study was to focus on progress in plasma research, identify the most compelling new scientific opportunities, evaluate prospects for broader application of plasmas, and offer guidance to realize these opportunities. The study paid particular attention to these last two points. This "demand-side" perspective provided a clear look at what plasma research can do to help achieve national goals of fusion energy, economic competitiveness, and nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship. This report provides an examination of the broad themes that frame plasma research: low-temperature plasma science and engineering; plasma physics at high energy density; plasma science of magnetic fusion; space and astrophysical science; and basic plasma science. Within those themes, the report offers a bold vision for future developments in plasma science. Good. No dust jacket as issued. Prepublication Copy subject to editorial corrections.
