In December 2011, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) asked the Institute of Medicine to evaluate its scientific merit assessment processes that are applied to directed research tasks funded through NASA's Human Research Program (HRP), and to determine best practices from similar assessment processes that are used in other US agencies.
