Beilin is a government insider who uses his inside knowledge to good effect. He has served in various appointed posts in the Israeli government and since 1988 has been a member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset. He is intrigued by the background and political development of Israeli government. Indeed, his book, ostensibly a history of Israel, is really a study of how the government truly works. He examines the rulers of Israel, devoting many pages to the various inside and outside pressure groups. Beilin also explores the Israel-Arab impasse. He notes how the overwhelming concern for security has absorbed energies that could better be used in confronting the many challenges facing Israel today. This readable study is recommended for libraries with strong history and political science collections.
