Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
MALCOLM KINIRY is director of writing at Rutgers University, Newark, and has written articles on basic writing, writing across the curriculum, and curriculum development, as well as Renaissance studies. He taught in the UCLA Writing Program for seven years and is currently working on a language reader for composition courses.
MIKE ROSE, a professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, is one of the most prominent names in composition studies. He has produced important work in remedial reading and writing, writing across the curriculum, the cognition of composing, and the politics of literacy. Among his books are Lives on the Boundary: The Struggles and Achievements of America's Underprepared (1989) andPossible Lives: The Promise of Public Education in America (1995). He has received numerous awards for his work in language and literacy, including awards from the National Academy of Education, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Modern Language Association, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Both in 1991 and 1992 he, as coauthor, won the prestigious Richard Braddock Award for the outstanding article published each year in College Composition and Communication. His most recent award is the 1997 Grawemeyer Award in Education for Possible Lives.

Unlike the typical rhetorically arranged reader, Critical Strategies for Academic Thinking and Writing doesn't treat these strategies as static patterns but instead helps students reflect on how and when to use them, what they enable students to do, their limitations, and their effect on thinking. New to This Edition - Thematically linked readings throughout each strategy chapter provide a body of knowledge that students can use to apply the strategy. The readings represent a range of current topics from various disciplines - the changing definition of intelligence, child poverty in the United States, the construction of guilt or innocence in the law, immigration patterns, primate research and what it reveals about language and behavior, and the relation between literature and cultural politics. - 52 of the 104 readings are new. While truly academic and truly cross-disciplinary, the readings are also interesting, accessible, and relatively brief (most are 3-7 pages). Headnotes are now included for all the readings. - Essay-length model reading now provided for each strategy shows students how professional writers use the strategy. - Substantially revised and expanded apparatus gives students more help. All of the Opening Problems that start each chapter are new, 40 percent of the writing assignments are new or revised, and new sets of Further Assignments (which ask students to connect readings and do some research) conclude each chapter.
