Inhaltsangabe

This book aims to develop a model of legitimacy in international relations which takes seriously the idea of legitimacy as being a value judgement to the Weberian tradition and writings of international lawyers who concentrate on custom, practice and procedure. Concentrating on the West, the model looks at the interactions and contradictions between the value systems of the state system, the liberal ideal internationals economy. Through an examination of the rise and fall of post-World War Two Yugoslavia, and the international response to its dissolution, the book shows how a value-based approach to legitimacy throws some new light on the reasons for and timing of Yugoslavia's collapse and the policy choices by those trying to cope with a desperate and difficult situation.
