Walking on Eggs grippingly relates a scientific adventure story. In November 1997, palaeontologists Luis Chiappe and Lowell Dingus came across a remarkable find on the cold plains of southern Argentina: a dinosaur nesting ground, where some ancient but unknown species deposited tens of thousands of eggs that, for some reason, never hatched. Their work, as they recount in this memoir of discovery, thus had many components: among other matters, Chiappe and Dingus needed to determine the creatures that had left their offspring in the Patagonian sandstone, how many millions of years ago they had done so, and what had happened to prevent the eggs from hatching in the first place. Doctors Chiappe and Dingus led the research team which, on a field trip to the Patagonian desert in South America in 1997, came across an extraordinary palaeontological coup: the discovery of a kind of dinosaur maternity ward, a field of eggs 80 million years old, some of which were still unhatched. Then, on a later expedition, they found a nearly complete skeleton of a completely new species of dinosaur - a twenty-foot predator they named Aucasaurus, after Auca Maheuvo, the name they had given the site.

WALKING ON EGGS is not just the compelling account of how these miraculous finds were made. Interweaving chapters featuring field adventures and dinosaur-collecting with others dealing with the history, processes and scientific models involved in solving the mysteries surrounding this spectacular site and its ancient inhabitants, the book is also about the nature of scientific discovery and how such finds contribute to knowledge.
