Inhaltsangabe

Biomedical Engineering Modeling of Pancreatic, Respiratory, and Renal Regulatory Systems, and their Medical Assessments addresses the need for biomedical engineering to provide physiological analysis of organ systems and their medical applications to help enable quantitative formulation of physiological systems and defining their functions and dysfunctions, leading to precision diagnostics of diabetes, lung diseases, and kidney failure, often in the form of non-dimensional indices. The book chapters also deal with treatment systems, namely automated insulin infusion systems, hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. The book is formulated to solve many physiological, bioengineering, and medical problems.

Biomedical Engineering Modeling of Pancreatic, Respiratory, and Renal Regulatory Systems, and their Medical Assessments addresses the need for Biomedical Engineering to provide physiological analysis of organ systems as well as their medical applications. This can enable quantitative formulation of physiological systems, defining their functions and dysfunctions, leading to precision diagnostics of diabetes, lung diseases, and kidney failure, often in the form of non-dimensional indices. The book chapters also deal with treatment systems, namely automated insulin infusion system, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The book chapters are formulated to solve many physiological, bioengineering, and medical problems. The book is divided into three Sections. Section I: Pancreatic System and Glucose-Insulin Regulatory System Engineering and Medical Assessment, provides elaborate analyses of (i) Pancreatic physiology, (ii) Detection of subjects who are diabetic and at the risk of being diabetic, based on the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test modelling of the glucose-insulin regulatory system, in terms of differential equations of blood glucose concentration and insulin concentration in response to glucose input rate, and (iii) Glucose-Insulin Control system modelling involving a noninvasive blood glucose sensor, for lowering the glucose concentration after a meal, by the application of insulin infusion based on the glucose response. Section II: Pulmonary System Engineering and Medical Assessment, provides in depth analyses of (i) Respiratory system modelling carried out for assessment of airway and tissue properties in lung disease, and (ii) Lung ventilation modelling for development of a non-invasive ventilatory index for differential diagnosis of patients. Section III: Renal System Engineering and Medical Assessment, provides readers with comprehensive analyses of (i) Determining kidney obstructions by Renogram data modelling, and (ii) Artificial kidney function and dialysis physiology.

Biomedical Engineering Modeling of Pancreatic, Respiratory, and Renal Regulatory Systems, and their Medical Assessments is written by Dr. Dhanjoo Ghista, a pioneer in the field of Biomedical Engineering. The book can serve as a reference or textbook for upper-level undergraduate or graduate level Biomedical Engineering or Medical school courses, and is a foundational reference for Biomedical Engineers, Computer Scientists, Mathematicians, and physicians who are conducting research and addressing applied clinical applications of computational modelling in these three key physiological systems of the human body.
