At Tulle the SS hanged 99 civilians and at Oradour they massacred a further 642. The legendary SOE operative Violette Szabo was captured by a das Reich patrol after a gun battle south of Limoges. As the bulk of the division crawled north by road their vital petrol supplies were destroyed by bombing directed of officers and men of the Special Air Service Regiment who had been parachuted in near Poitiers to attack German communications.
