This book presents the findings of a study that sought to determine the optimal time for collecting volatile organic chemical samples from wells finished in fine-grained glacial tills. The author found that purging should be required for wells finished in fine-grained sediments and that samples collected 4 hours after purging may yield a higher concentration of VOCs than those collected earlier or later, although this difference was not statistically significant. The importance of purging was not found to have a correlation with the volatility of individual compounds, as hypothesized. These results are intended to improve the accuracy of groundwater sampling for volatile organic compounds from monitoring wells finished in fine-grained materials.
