Excerpt from A Progressive German Reader, Adapted to the American Edition of Ollendorff's German Grammar: With Copious Notes and a Vocabulary
Ins end proposed in the preparation of this volume was to resent to the Public a book of selections from the German Classics, more progressive m the arrangement of its matter, and more inviting to the first attempts of the 1earner than simi lar works heretofore in use. It proceeded from a conviction that a Reader of any, and especially of a modern language studied on the method of Ollendorfi; should in some measure be made a representative of the literature of that language; both for the purpose of relieving the pupil from the perpetual repetition of exercises and conversational phrases by affording nim an Opportunity of applying his knowledge of the Grammar in another direction, and especially for the purpose of giving him an early introduction to those Authors whose works he is afterwards expected to read, and without which, his attain ments in the language will ever be imperfect. It should, in the second place, be complete in itself - pre-supposing nothing but the Grammar, and requiring no. Other exponent of its' meaning but itself and an intelligent learner.
