Excerpt from Methods of ysis of Commercial Fertilizers<br/><br/>The retail dealers put these products on sale with a guarantee of their dry state, and a large number of farmers do not perceive the fraud which is hidden under this very innocent expression. In this way guano containing 25 per cent. Of water has been placed on sale as hav ing 12 per cent. Of phosphoric acid, when in reality it had only 8 per cent. Having thus secured as fair a sample as possible, it is recommended, inasmuch as the uranium method is to be used in the determination, to ignite it in order to destroy organic matter. In respect of the method of doing this the French chemists are silent, and it appears from this, as well as many other parts of the report, that they have not studied the publications of our society, as carefully as they ought to have done.
