This permitted as an introduction to my essay on duel ling, I think that duels should be considered, first, m them selves; secondly, with reference to the causes of duelling; thirdly, with regard to public Opinion; fourthly, with regard to the law, which has reference to that crime.

Duels would, perhaps, be set forth as a fatal evidence, that ferocity, or, in other words, barbarity, is the original sin of the animal creation, since the human kind preserves it in common with wild beasts, and birds of prey, notwithstanding all the civilization of which men are susceptible.

Among civilized people, where falsehood was the most abominable vice, and personal valour, a sovereign virtue; and where laws did not exist, disputes, quarrels, and even trials, were decided by the sword.

Where a prince, either by his awn valour, or by fortune, obtained royal authority over fellow chiefs, who being armed, and having followers, could not only with diffict be brought to submit to tribunals, but even to recognise a law, the settling of quarrels, and disputes, and title's by the sword was still a necessary evil; and kings found it to their interest to give leave to combatants, who could not be pre vented from fighting.

Among civilized people, duelling is thought a necessary substitute to revenge those offences, which either are not punished by the law, or are deemed not punishable by law.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the history, causes, and consequences of duelling, a practice that has persisted in various forms for centuries, particularly among the upper classes. Exploring its prevalence in ancient Greece and Rome and its later adoption by medieval knights, the author traces the evolution of duelling from a means of settling disputes to a violent and often fatal custom rooted in the defense of personal honor. The author questions the validity of honor as a justification for duelling, arguing that true honor lies in seeking justice through legal channels and in respecting the sanctity of human life. They highlight the devastating impact of duels on families and communities, as well as their failure to deter the very offenses they are intended to avenge. This book offers a thought-provoking analysis of the complex factors that have fueled duelling throughout history, shedding light on its enduring appeal and its profound consequences. It invites readers to reconsider the concept of honor and to embrace a more enlightened approach to conflict resolution that values human life and the rule of law.
