It illustrates the painstaking trial and error of early aviation as pilots pushed the limits of human endeavour in their individual attempts to conquer the challenges of long-distance oceanic flight. The author highlights the events leading up to Charles Lindbergh's triumphant transatlantic crossing in 1927, placing this significant milestone in the context of other significant and daring attempts, such as that of Alcock and Brown in 1919. Providing insightful detail of the technical challenges faced by these early pioneers of flight, the author also reflects on the psychological impact of such daring ventures.
