The despotism of th universe had waged war against the power of the hu man understanding, and for many ages successfull combated its efforts; but the natural energy of thi immortal property of human existence was incapabl of being controlled by such extraneous and degradin' restraints. It burst the walls of its prison, explore: the earth, discovered the properties of its componen parts, analyzed their natures, and gave to them spe cific classification and arrangement. Not content wit] terrestrial researches, intellect abandoned the earth and travelled in quest of science through the celestia regions. The heaven's were explored, the stars Wen counted, and the revolutions of the planets subjecta.
