Excerpt from Frau Holde: Ein Gedicht
The author of Frau Holde, Rudolf Baum bach, was born at Kranichfeld, Thuringen (thu ringia), on Sept. 28, 1841. He received his train ing at the gymnasium at Meiningen, where his father held the position of court-physician to the Duke. Later he pursued the study of natural sciences at the universities of Leipzig, Wurzburg and Heidelberg. For some years after the com pletion of his university work he was engaged in teaching. In 1877 he won name and fame with his Zlatorog, and since that time has devoted himself to literary labors exclusively. His ad mirable talents and genuine poetic gifts are, per haps, nowhere more striking than in the present poem though others, such as Zlatorog, Mein F ruhjahr Horand und Hilde, Der Pathe des Todes, well repay the student's attention.
