Excerpt from A German Reader for Beginners: With an Introduction on English-German Cognates, Notes and Vocabulary
The anglo-saxons, who in the fifth century began to settle in England, came from northern Germany and spoke low-german, while German proper is a high-german dialect, so that the kinship between German and English, through anglo-saxon, is indeed a very close one. As a natural consequence, they have in common many words of Germanic origin. Such words are called cognates.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the evolution of related words in German and English, known as cognates. It delves into the linguistic phenomenon of Grimm's Law, which governs the shifts in consonants that occurred as Germanic languages diverged from their common ancestor, Indo-European. Through detailed analysis, the author demonstrates how to recognize cognates by identifying these consonant correspondences, even if the words appear vastly different in their current forms. This comprehensive guide not only establishes a foundation for understanding the connections between German and English vocabulary but also unveils the fascinating processes that have shaped language throughout history. By examining the evolution of shared linguistic roots, this book sheds light on the complex and dynamic nature of language, inviting readers to engage with the interplay of historical, cultural, and linguistic forces that have influenced the development of these two prominent Indo-European tongues.
